What is an Evil Eye?

Did you realize the eye shaped bracelets and necklaces became such a fashion statement lately?

Wherever we look, we see celebrities and and fashionistas are wearings these beautiful talisman charms which are called "Evil Eye" in their daily life. What is evil eye? The name comes from the Mediterranean / Middle Eastern superstition of envious eyes and it is believed that "Evil Eye" will protect you from it. Therefore we can call it a good luck charm or a protective art.

The evil eye tradition dates back to Ancient Greece and spreaded througout the world. Greeks call it máti, Persians call it chashm zakhm (injury caused by eye), Turks Nazar Bead, Italians refer to it as malocchio, in Arabic it is named as Nathar which means eyesight. Almost every old civilization has this protective charm in their culture. Even Hawaiians call it stink eye which is maka pilau. No matter what you call it the meaning and the purpose is always very similar. It is believed that the person who wears it repels Jealous looks and bad luck from herself. Since babies and children are the most vulnerable, mothers of newborns always receive some type of evil eye jewelry after birth, to wear on themselves or put it on the baby.

I remember buying evil eye jewelry and even home decoration items, such as glass wall art and decorative accessories, as souvenirs from my European/Mediterranean vacations. However nowadays evil eyes are one of the biggest fashion statements with their funky  design and vivid colors, blue being the most popular.

A lot of celebrities celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, Shakira, Madonna,  Cameron Diaz, Kelly Ripa and Rhianna have been showing off their beautiful evil eye neck pieces and bracelets with their high fashion outfits and setting the trend for this well known charm.

Evil eyes come in many colors and materials. The most popular is the vivid blue, black, white combination. It is usually made out of glass and put together with ribbons and threads.

Even though this charm is thousands of years old the evolution of evil eye in 2013 is impossible to ignore. Nowadays they are encrusted with pave set diamonds and precious stones as well as natural gems such as turquoise and mother of pearl, which makes them much more elegant and stylish.
